Microsoft has delayed (and maybe killed) its Android app porting tool, Project Astoria

Remember Project Astoria, Microsoft’s plan to port Android apps onto Windows? It’s been delayed, and seems as though Microsoft may be killing it off altogether.

Speaking to Re/Code, a Microsoft spokesperson said “the Astoria bridge is not ready yet, but other tools offer great options for developers,” adding “we’re committed to offering developers many options to bring their apps to the Windows Platform.”

Microsoft is putting Astoria on hold, but refused to say whether or not the project had been killed off. There was also no word on Project Islandwood, Microsoft’s trojan horse for porting iOS apps.

It would be a giant swing-and-a-miss for Microsoft if either Astoria or Islandwood has been discontinued, and especially damaging if both were. While developers were naturally (and rightfully) skeptical of these projects, it would be bad for Microsoft’s image as a company if they discontinued either after loudly boasting about how easy they were to use.
